Birthday Plans

Caroline's birthday is quickly approaching and I'm feeling guilty about the fact that it will be right before we move so I'm trying to plan so that it isn't brushed over.  I asked her what she wanted to do and she suggested a party at our house but I told her that unfortunately this is NOT the year for a party at our house. Then I asked her who she would invite and she couldn't come up with more than 2 people.  And that made me sad and remember that THIS is one of the reasons why we're moving.  She should have a couple of girls in her class she wants to have over for a party by this age.  I told her that next year, we will have party - a slumber party even.  She liked that idea.  She'll be turning TEN after all and that's when I had my first sleepover.  Here's hoping she'll have some kids in her class that she feels like she fits in with.  I'm not saying she needs a gaggle of friends, just 2 or 3.

But anyway, back to this year and her last year in the single digits.  My bright idea this morning was to offer to take her out to dinner and then to go and pick out a new bike.  The bike she got when she was 5 is pretty much too small for her now but she keeps on riding it and loves it so rather then just pick one out for her, I thought she'd like to pick it herself and have some alone time with us.  I need to think of a fun place to take her.

When I asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday after we decided a party was out, she said, "I just want a normal day." in a strangely sad tone.  Of course that makes me sad but I also think she's being purposely dramatic for my benefit.  She had already complained to me that she was going to have to go to school on her birthday.  Sorry dear, the world does not stop for your birthday.  So if anyone has any fun holiday themed ideas, please share them.

I promise, I will make this up to you next year, Caroline.
