Countdown to Summer

With as hot as it's been these past few weeks, it sure as heck feels like summer.  Of course, school still isn't out which, with all the super hot weather, has made it seem completely prolonged.  Caroline's last day is on Friday and even though they didn't have to extend the year by any days thanks to the school system building enough snow days into their calendar, they weren't able to cut the last few days off as they have in the past because of all the used snow days.  In the past few weeks, Caroline has had 5 early dismissals thanks to the hot weather because so many schools in our county are not air conditioned.  Her school is completely air conditioned so it just seems ridiculous that she's getting out for the heat.  I understand why they can't just let the non-air conditioned schools out, but I know it's been really hard on some parents with these early dismissals, particularly when they know their kid's school doesn't need to dismiss.  Our county and the city have been dismissing early - I'm curious if any of the other neighboring counties have been because I haven't heard anything.

Caroline's class has had very limited attendance too.  Ms. B said she's had 7 or 8 students missing each day.  I can understand why, it's pretty obvious they are already finished with their real classwork and testing.  Maybe it's because they know kids stop coming at the end that they finish up early early or maybe parents just know it's done and the incentive to send them regularly is gone.  Either way, it makes no sense to me and these last 10-15 days almost seem worthless and just to meet the state day count requirement.  Caroline's been there every day regardless as I don't want to set the precedent of not going to school.  When I was attending Caroline's field day on Wednesday, Ms. B told me that her last day was going to be this Tuesday because she has to have surgery on Wednesday (she'd hoped to put it off but it's become medically necessary at this point).  I was kind of sad to hear that but glad she told me so we can bring her end of year gift to her on the right day.

I was in the city on Thursday when the temp in the county was at 100.  In the city, it was even hotter.  Oh good grief.  I had to go outside to walk to our lunch location and back and to and from the garage and I thought I was going to melt.  I felt bad for the guys in their full suits.

As for Bryce, he is done with school.  The place he has attended this year is technically a daycare with a pre-school program for his age so he could go all summer, but I hardly think it's fair to send him all summer when Caroline is out.  Personally, I think it would be good for him to get out of the house a few days a week but that's just not going to happen.  I was actually a little sad about dropping him off on his last day on Friday.  Knowing that he's about to start kindergarten and he'd be leaving all his friends at pre-k.  He, as usual, took things in stride.

I have a bunch of things I need to do this week in preparation for full on summer.  I need to get the official calendar done that includes the summer camps, vacation, and free outing opportunities.  I also need to get my new chore chart together as I want the kids to be helping more around the house - I'm inventing a reward system to get things to actually happen.  We'll see how that works.

It will be July before we know it!

Emily has a full week this week and then three half days next week. I'm kind of annoyed because at the kindergarten show, the teachers basically admitted that all "work" was done. They have fun activities planned for this week, but I have no idea what they will do on the three half days. It is anticlimactic. We did not have any early dismissals for heat because all of the schools have a/c.
