Birthday Curse

I just noticed that our school system put out the 2011-2012 calendar and was checking it to see when spring break was as we are starting to think more seriously about a Disney trip there that week.  As I was looking at it, I noticed when the first day of school was, the first day of school that will be Bryce's first day of kindergarten - August 29.

Poor kid - he'll have his birthday on the first day of school!  I had a pretty good idea with a birthday the last week of August that this was bound to happen a few times but the first day of kindergarten?  Although the way the school did staggered entry for Caroline maybe he won't have school that day.  But Bryce usually has such a sunny disposition, he'll probably be great about it.

Anyone else have their birthday on the first day of school?

That happened to me many times as my bday is August 26th. I never cared too much but then I liked school.

And Disney is VERY busy that week since MANY it's the only week that most teachers can vaca with their families (Christmas is too busy with holiday stuff and most teachers have summer jobs that prevent summer vacations) The week before and after Easter are very crowded - just to throw that out there. (We are planning on going this late April/ealy May to miss the Spring Breakers and before colleges/schools get out. Makenzie will be in PreK but taking her out a few days isn't going to be so bad and we wanna go before both girls are in school so we are limited to school breaks just like everyone else.) Just letting you know :)

Yes, we know that's a crowded week. I've been 3 times as a kid and all 3 times it was spring break. I won't take my kids out of school for a trip to Disney. Maybe for some kind of educational trip, but not Disney.

Oh and we're also hoping my brother and his wife can come - and they are both teachers.

Bracken - duh, of course you had a first day school birthday. I figured it might make him feel more special, especially in kindergarten where the teacher might make a big deal out of it. (I'll contact her ahead of time to make sure!)

The kids love it too when you bring cupcakes to school on the first day. Makes you feel kind of special :>

I clicked here to mention the spring break crowds, but it looks like I was beaten to it. LOL.

I'm not a fan of taking kids out of school for anything other than sickness either, but since our extended family always goes in January or November, we've become off-season converts.

Though I would *never* consider pulling him out for entire week for vacation, I will schedule it around a weekend and a professional study day (since those are obviously not nationwide) so Ben misses 2, maybe 2-1/2 days MAX. It really is worth considering. The January/Feb/November crowds are so much nicer. Airfare is cheaper too!

Missed your comment about the teacher relatives... that kinda kills the off-season thing anyway. Ah well...

I guess my whole thing is we want to go for an entire week so we really can't swing it any other time w/o pulling them out of school. Plus, everyone tells you DON'T GO AT SPRING BREAK, yet, clearly, people are going or they wouldn't tell you that, KWIM? Like I said, I went in 82, 87 and 92 at spring break and my memory serves me well that yes, it was crowded but Disney handled it well. Plus, by going for an entire week we wouldn't be rushed. It is what it is, I'm really not worrying about it. We'll still have a great time.

Won't he like that? Kind of a big deal!

We are going over a weekend so we're pulling Kenzie out most likely Friday/Monday/Tueday. She's only 1/2 days next year since it's a PreK and Tori won't be in school yet. That's why we are going next year, old enough for the girls to "get" Disney but young enough to miss a day (or 3) of school and not miss much (and as a whole I would NEVER take the girls out for vaca - my parents did that when I was in 3rd grade and it really wasn't great - I missed the 1st week of school because they took a trip to Disney - not good timing, if you ask me). Disney is too expensive to go all the time (I have been luckily enough to have been 6 times in my life) so we're trying to plan it just right (and we're not going with anyone else so we're free to plan when we want but having a big family trip sounds like a lot of fun!)

Oh and I say Bryce will automatically become the "cool kid" if he's allowed to bring cupcakes on the 1st day of school - not the B needs any help with friend-making but what an introduction!
