The Next Country Star?

Well we've always known Caroline was a singer.  She sings constantly.  She "writes" most of her own songs and thinks they are quite good.  When she makes up a new song, she sings it over and over and over and over and over.  Last night she made up a new one called "Come Back to This Country."  No idea what that's about except for the chorus that keeps saying "Come Back to This Country" over and over and over and over.  The verses change every time and are a bit meandering but she always comes back to the same chorus.  But in addition to that song, she's been walking around wearing Bryce's black cowboy hat while singing it.  I asked her if she liked country music and wanted to be a country star and she said "YES!!"

Did I mention how much I HATE country music?  Hate it.  But lately I've noticed a growing trend with the type of music she likes.  Yes she likes a lot of pop stuff they play on the local stations but a lot of the singers she's been gravitating toward have been the country-pop crossover type.  Taylor Swift, obviously, but now her favorite song is "I Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum. (Had to Google that - no idea who sang it except it was annoyingly country sounding.)

I'm telling you, this child has music in her soul.  I asked her if she'd ever want to take dance lessons and she said no (even though she likes to dance), she wants to SING.   I've looked into some workshops for the summer and it seems the things that she would be interested in doing are for slightly older kids (ages 7 and up), so maybe next summer.  I'm not sure if she's interested in musical theater or not, but I should talk to my SIL who is a theater teacher and might have some ideas.

As to whether or not she has a good voice - I'm not sure.  She can carry a tune quite well and you know what song she's singing (when she's singing covers - ha ha), but I'm not one of those American Idol-esque parents who will lie to their kid and tell them they are the next pop star.  I really don't know.  Suffice it to say, I see music of some sort in my daughter's future (I see some possible guitar in Bryce's future too, especially considering the accomplished guitar players we have in my family).   In my own family growing up, we weren't what you'd call athletic like Jason's family was.  We all played a musical instrument, were involved in church choirs (voice and handbell), and just did a lot of artsy stuff.   I'm not going to force any of the kids into any kind of sport or music so we'll kind of see what paths they take but I definitely see some kind of future where Caroline is singing to more people than herself in front of her bedroom mirror.
