Bed Rails A Go-Go

As nice as bed rails are at keeping kids from rolling out in bed, they are a bit difficult. A bed can never look pretty with them on and it is very difficult for a grown up to get in and out of a kid's bed after snuggling with them. And don't get me started on making a bed with bed rails - I can't tell you how many times I've scraped my hand while doing so.

Well, Caroline seems to be DONE with them!! She asked a few weeks ago about taking it off and because it was way past her bedtime and I didn't feel like lifting the mattress up to shimmy it down, I told her we'd do it later on and then I forgot. But then yesterday before naps, I figured getting her to sleep in a rail-less bed might be a novelty and actually get her to nap. It worked! She was so proud of herself when she slept without it! And she did again last night and again today for nap. (Can I tell you how much I love having a 5 year old that still naps with some regularity?)

Although there was a mishap last night....before bed, Bryce and Caroline were in playing on her new "free bed" and allegedly Caroline told him to jump on the bed with her. Well, apparently bed rails do more than just keep sleeping kids in their bed, they keep jumping kids from falling too because within seconds, Bryce had fallen off the bed and banged his elbow up pretty good. He kept saying, "Caroline told me to jump on the bed!!" And we kept reminding him about those darn monkeys that kept jumping on the bed.... Sigh. Kids will never grow tired of jumping on beds.

So hopefully this weekend we'll remove the rails completely and put them away for Miss Piper. Although by the time Piper needs them, Bryce should be done with his. I can't tell you how nice it is not wrestling with those things. But it does make me laugh because I told Caroline she could sleep a lot further from the edge if she just took a few of her "friends" out of bed with her - she has a colossal pile that is between her pillow and the wall. But of course, she'd never put any of them in jeopardy of falling out of bed!

Okay yeah, so how much do I hate you that your 5-year-old still naps! :P

And I'm glad you psoted this because Ben has a bed rail too and I don't like the way it looks on the bed... been wondering when you take those down. But I swear, Ben can fall out of Ben even WITH the thing, so I really was afraid he'd have it there forever!

It helps that she gets up at 6 or 6:30. She naps at school without ANY problems about 98% of the time - peer pressure! Some weekends/days off it's harder but if she was up early or up late the night before, we can get one out of her. The key is getting her to lay still, if she lays still she falls asleep. But somedays, laying still is not in the cards.

As for the rails, I didn't see any end in sight either and all of a sudden she decided she was done. Kids do things when they are ready, I guess. And like you, I thought she could fall out w/ the rails on too. Although last night Jay said she was dangerously close to the edge when he went in thanks to the 6353 animals she's got in there. Gotta rearrange for tonight.

We just took of Emily's bed rail b/c she puked all over it. I had to take it off to clean it and then we just decided to leave it off. She is fine with it off so far and it is so much easier to make the bed!!!
