Dueling Heartbeats

When Bryce was born, we bought a Homedics Sound Spa (why in the world is it called a "spa?") for his room for white noise to drown out the yells and screams of his big sister. We mostly used the waterfall/white noise sound because it works best to drown out kid screams and I am convinced it really helped! Then several months ago, we ended up moving it to Caroline's room when we moved Bryce to his big boy room since HE was the one making all the noise and she needed to sleep. We quickly realized we needed another sound machine and bought the newer version of the machine which is shown in the link above. (The older version is pretty much the same thing with one less sound - rainforest - and a different look.)

When Bryce got his new one, he decided that his favorite sound was the heartbeat sound. The one sound that I find to be ANNOYING. And then Caroline got on this kick of having to have the exact same sound playing on her machine as does Bryce. Now, this sound annoys me for 2 reasons - 1. It's just noisy and doesn't soothe me. 2. It really doesn't drown out sound/noise like the other sounds do in a white noise type of way. And it is funny when you go upstairs after they are asleep and you can hear both their machines beating away and NEVER in sync. I'll usually turn them down a little when I go in so that I don't have to listen to it while I'm trying to go to sleep. My personal favorite is summer night, which used to be Caroline's before the heartbeat took over.

But, they both throw a fit if they don't get the sound they want and since I'm not sleeping there, I let it alone, but it still drives me nuts. Maybe it truly is soothing to them in a fetal type of way. I plan on getting this baby a sound machine as well so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before she is demanding the same sound her big brother and sister have. But until she can decide, we'll settle for the nice rain effect.

Do the sounds go all night or do they turn off after a certain amount of time? I should get one of those for G. to drown out the street noise for her naps....hmmm.
