BPA Followup....

My biggest concern at the moment for this BPA stuff is actually mine and Jason's water bottles since we both drink out of Nalgene bottles daily. Of course, the problems with BPA are generally linked to VERY high concentrations of the stuff, but if you can avoid it, do, right? Of course, I've been drinking out of a Nalgene since 2003.... But today, I ordered two of these nifty Camelbak "Better Bottles." BPA and phthalte free!

Next up are the bottles and there are actually reasonably priced BPA free ones out there now. Did you know that most countries in Europe and Canada have outlawed the stuff in food containers???? Funny that the US hasn't. And what really gets me is if you go to Avent's website and look at the FAQ about their bottles they pretty much dismiss any issue with the BPA in their bottles b/c the FDA says it's okay. Um yeah, wasn't it okay that there was LEAD IN PAINT about 30 years ago too???? Seriously, if it wasn't for the amazing Avent Isis manual pump, I'd totally be dumping their stuff, but it is really the best manual out there and I'll continue to use it occassionally with the Avent Via stuff b/c at least the Via is BPA free. (And I know the pump is probably made of the BPA plastic but it's not storing the milk which is really where the leaching is more serious.....) At least Medela caught onto the BPA stuff YEARS ago and none of their products have ever contained it. Thank heavens - I have quite a close relationship w/ my Medela pump.

Fortunately almost all the kid's cups and such are not made w/ the bad plastic, so we're good on that. Hopefully given how much more press this stuff is getting, in a few years we won't have to worry about it b/c it won't be in anything that we use w/ food. Of course by then, they will have found something else toxic.

OOH, those water bottles look fun. Which one did you order?

We got the 1 liter better bottles w/ the regular caps. We're so used to having a 32oz bottle, we didn't want to go smaller even though the color selection is lame on the 1 L ones.

I feel blindsided by this whole BPA thing. I've seen a couple news stories on it and L claims he knew all about it, but I had no idea until recently. I'm not sure what to do about it. We use Gerber & Medela bottles mostly, but I have to check the sippy cups and stuff.

If it's so bad, I just wish they would recall the stuff or stop making it altogether!

Jason didn't know much about it either and then this morning said, "Hey, I saw something in the paper about that after I read your blog." Ha ha! I'm his source for news, I guess. But Europe and Canada have already banned the stuff and apparently there is legislation on the books in some states (California, I know of) to outlaw it too.

It's funny what Jason said - I read your blog and then I saw a story in the hotel lobby about it. So you are a news source. Looking into it now to see what I have to trash ........... Thanks News lady!
