Sounds Fishy to Me

Last night as Jason snoozed on the couch and I flipped through my new Real Simple, I came to an article on fish entree recipes and was mildly intersted in a few of them. But the final page of the article was a warning about the fish we consume and about the frequency you should (or should not) be eating them due to the large amounts of mercury that are found in many common fish/seafood products. We constantly hear in health reports that we all need to include more fish in our diets because of the omega-3 fatty acids and lean source of protein and then you occassionally hear a slight warning about the mercury. I think I really only knew about the mercury in shark and knew that was always something to avoid.

So clearly I was shocked by the number of fish products that are completely off limits to pregnant and nursing women along with young children since mercury contamination is the most worrisome to developing babies and children. ALL tuna (domestic, imported, canned, etc) is off limits. Who knew?? And the other funny part was that on the "Try to Avoid" list for everyone were virtually ALL the fish that my dad attempts to catch on our summer trips to North Carolina. Oh and don't forget Baltimore people, Blue Crabs should be limited to once a month thanks to their supposed mercury levels too.....

So check it out for yourself here - you can even print out a pocket guide for your own reference. The key to a lot of the fish though is knowing where it came from which I know is not something I've ever asked in a restaurant and will surely be looking for on any/all my fish products from now on. Oh and moderation is important too - as are most things in life. Makes me glad after reading this that I'm not a big fish eater.

I know there is mercury in fish but you have to wonder -- people in Asia eat so much fish and they seem to be alright? Maybe it has to do with where it comes from.

Bracken - I thought about that too but then I realized that I really don't have any idea about the health of people over in say, China.

And then I think about how freaked people got about the small amount of mercury in some vaccines and it causing autism. You'd think more people would be freaking out about this. You know?
