Baltimore is #21

According to FitPregnancy magazine, Baltimore is #21 on the list of cities in the US to have a baby. Yes, 21 is better than 50, but still it's not top 10. Of course, if you look at why it's 21, you'll see some kind of scary statistics, but I really think that the thing that tips them in that direction is the fact that Baltimore already had such a grim outlook when it comes to crime and the drug problems of Baltimore City particularly with issues of lack of prenatal care, infant/maternal mortality, and low birth weight.

Not thrilled to see that we got a whopping F+ (+ ???) for breastfeeding with less than 64% of mothers even attempting it. No wonder I feel like a freak carting around my Medela PIS for pumping at work or attempting to NIP (nurse in public). It's just not something many Baltimore women do....

Thankfully, I am happy with my OB practice and the hospital where I've delivered/will deliver so I can't complain. Although now it makes sense why the doctors and lactation consultants I talk with are always so thrilled to hear how long I managed to breastfeed each of the kids - I'm in the minority. (Which is odd b/c on the online mom's community I'm on, you'd think that EVERYONE at least attempted breastfeeding these days....) Clearly based on what I'm reading on this survey, it's a regional thing!

Wow BF isn't that common in Baltimore. Seems like everyone I know has tried it - I did M for 7 months (no formula until then) and V's still going (with her getting about 3/4 of her daily intake from formula) Weird, I wonder what they judge as Baltimore, the city alone or including the county?
