Sound of Music: A Poll

After we got the kids to bed last night, I was a little disappointed to see that the Sound of Music had started at 7pm and I didn't discover it until after 9pm. I just love that movie and remember watching it for the first time around the Christmas holiday on television. I don't own it and I'm not sure I'd want to since I enjoy seeing it on a random basis although I do have a very clear recollection of renting it in graduate school with my cousin and sitting in my apartment and belting out all the familiar songs.

So I'm laying there watching the Reverend Mother sing "Climb Every Mountain" and Jason looks up at me and makes some smart remark about it being such a "great" and what in the world was going on. YOU MEAN YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THE SOUND OF MUSIC BEFORE?????

I couldn't believe it. I know I always watched it around Christmas but I also remember watching it EVERY year in middle school chorus class and since I know Jason took general music in middle school, I'm shocked he never had to watch it. I told him that was probably the worst song in the whole movie and he might actually be interested since it does have some historical relevance given the setting of the early years of the Nazi regime. To which he replies, "I don't like music in my movies."

So here's my question, have you seen the Sound of Music? Is my husband the only one out there that hasn't seen it?

I have no hope of ever getting him to watch it either since before we got married I convinced him to watch Gone With the Wind and he will never let me forget how much he hated that movie. But, I have to say, I think Gone With the Wind is in a VERY different realm than the Sound of Music and I can understand why people do not like GWTW. (I also got him to watch Titanic and he says that is his all time least favorite movie, and I kind of agree with him on that.)

Well, I can assure you that given my mother and I always love to watch old movies we've had to have it playing at some point in the same house at the same time Jay was there. However, he more then likely bolted somewhere else while it was playing. :)
Now as far as the movie itself, I have to say I could take it or leave it. If it's on t.v. when nothing else is on I may watch it but I have to be in the mood. In my book GWTW is far, far better! I watch every time I catch it on t.v.!

I heart the Sound of Music. I used to own it, but a friend of mine borrowed it in high school, and I haven't seen it since.

As for Titanic, it was fine to see once. I never need to see it again. Ever.

I love Sound of Music. I watch it every year. Always loved it as a little girl (of course, the Von Trapp family was big like mine so I pretended I was Brigita.) L has seen it too, a few times he watched with me or his sister & mother.

I, however, had never seen Gone With the Wind until maybe 3 or 4 years ago and I have only seen it one time. I remember wondering what all the fuss was about. I don't think Scarlett was my type of heroine.

Of course, I used to watch the Sound of Music with my Oma and she would tell me that she grew up in Germany with those mountains....! Love it!

I've seen SOM many many times and been in it 3 times. The movie is a LOT better then the stage play. No puppets on stage.

Sound of Music is okay. I was in the play when I was younger but really have no desire to watch it as an adult. I am shocked to hear Jason has never seen it. Did he at least know the title when you said it?

I,too, love The Sound of Music. In fact, summer of 2006 I went with some girlfriends to the Hollywood Bowl and watched the stage version of it. Then last summer, I went with a girlfriend to The Sound of Music sing-along -- the audience sings along to a film version of it.

It sounded like a night of torture to my husband and my friend's husband, so we left them at home. From what I've gleaned, Sound of Music is definitely a chick thing. :)

Count me in the SOM lovers club!!! George just showed our kiddos the highlights the other night (on DVD so he could skip the borrrrrring stuff like CLimb Every Mountain!). I also would consider it completely different than GWTW- both are great flicks, but totally different.

THe look of glee on Anya's face as she saw Maria and the kids dancing to the songs that I have sung so many times was great! So Jay didn't like South Park? SOmehow I'd think he would like that one.

GWTW is an acquired taste and I'm not someone who thinks that EVERYONE should like it. But, I do think it's an important piece of film history. Scarlett is someone you love to hate and the whole saga is just interesting.
