Gladys & Herman Go To School

I think I've told you in the past that Caroline seems to be hungry to go to school - talks about how she will go when she is 4 1/2 and all the stuff she will do. So last week, she asked me if we could play school and I, of course, agreed. (Why didn't I think of this before?)

We've got plenty of school type stuff to play with, an easel, a letters workbook, magnetic letters/numbers, and lots of stuff for arts & crafts. So Caroline put on her backpack and so did Bryce and they got all excited when I set up a little school room in our family room. They even set up some chairs to pretend they were riding the bus and Caroline packed her lunch (with play food) just like Cathy's kids do every morning before school.

And I'm not quite sure if it was my idea or Caroline's but it was decided that they needed school names - so out of the blue I decided that Caroline's school name is Gladys and Bryce's school name is Herman. (Great names, huh?) And they have STUCK! We've played school 3 times and each time I HAVE to call them Gladys and Herman. Bryce even insists on writing both "Bryce" and "Herman" on his artwork and when he showed my mom the turkeys we made during craft time, he made it clear that it said Bryce and Herman on it.

Last night's school day was very fruitful - we had craft time where we talked about turkeys, we had story time, we had letters time, and we had music time. Both Gladys and Herman were VERY sad when school was over and it was time to go home (aka take a bath). But I promised both Gladys and Herman that there are lots more days to play school and I will keep being their teacher, Mrs. Copperpot.

Sounds like lots of fun. I use to play school all the time when I was younger. My sisters are older than I am so they were always the teacher and I was the student. My mom loved it because I use to do all the school work and even take the nap! Sydney keeps asking to go to school -- it is interesting as they get older how they find going to school so important. Let's hope we can keep that enthusiasm!!!
