Our Garden of Weedin'

For the past 4 years, Jason and I have had a vegetable garden in our backyard. It started out pretty small and expanded a good bit this year. So far, we've attempted to grow tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, mini bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins, broccoli, and onions. I use the word attempted since our efforts were not rewarded for some of them. As most people do, we've had the most success with tomatoes and zucchini/squash. And the weirdest thing was last year we tried pumpkins for the first time hoping to have some lovely orange fruit that we wouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg for at Halloween, but while the plants flowered and flowered, they NEVER gave any fruit. We had a similar problem with the zucchini which was odd given that we never had a problem in years past.

So this year we decided to try again and were starting to think the same thing was going to happen, but guess what? Jason found TWO pumpkins starting!!! YAY! And we've already had 2 big crops of tomatoes and the cherry tomatoes aren't far behind. Our attempt at broccoli was okay - the plants looked like broccoli and got eaten up by some kind of green grubby type thing, but they never headed. My sister (a gardening expert) said that they probably wouldn't head up now. So we trashed them and made room for our ever expanding crop of zucchini and pumpkins.

And it's amazing how much weeding we have to do in that little space. We both go out weekly and pull up so much crap, it's ridiculous. But it's worth it knowing we're growing some of our own veggies. Mmmm!!
