The Wonder of Sprinklers

I have a very vivid memory of being a kid and when walking home from school, scoping out sprinklers in an attempt to get a little wet on my walk home from school on a temperate day. I remember riding my bike through the neighbor's sprinkler spray with all the kids on my block and hoping to get as wet as I could. I remember the way it felt to have those cool drops on my skin on a hot day and how much fun it was to keep getting sprinkled. Clearly this is a thrill for the younger set as my two children are now enjoying it.

The past few nights on our family walks, the kids have discovered the excitement upon seeing a sprinkler in our path and knowing that it was coming and then cheering when they even only had a few drops of water hit them. There was some minor construction done in our neighborhood recently where many houses had to have their grinder pumps replaced so many folks have a large spot in their front yard (near their sidewalk) ripped up and resodded. So of course, they are watering it and that means sprinklers galore!

The other night, I was pulling them in a wagon and made sure that every sprinkler they saw gave them a little sprinkle. Caroline squealed and Bryce yelled "YAAAY!!!" each time. (Jay walked around making sure not to get wet, while I stood there with them.) Then, last night, the kids and I just took a short walk around the block and Caroline kept taking off and running ahead each time she saw a new sprinkler ahead. Of course, Bryce had to catch up. But because they were walking themselves, they didn't quite understand the timing of a sprinkler and kept missing it. But I told them where to stand and wait. Caroline was pretty damp by the time we got home - but each little drip she accumulated was worn with pride.

It really is the simple things that make life great.......
