Sickies at the Beeps

Caroline has a horrendous cold. We're talking snot, weepy eyes, hoarse voice, and a low fever. She's crabby too. I feel so bad for her and it doesn't help that the weather has not improved. Today was a yucky day. We've got one day left and we're hoping for one solid day of sun. We haven't had one yet where it hasn't rained. Why does it almost not rain at all all summer and now we're finally on vacation and it rains a LOT. Ugh. But I guess any day on vacation is better than a good day at work.

I do think though taht I will end up being more tired after the vacation is over since it has been a week of managing kids, getting up at the normal time, going to bed later, and doing all the stuff to prepare and then decompress from vacation. I don't even think I know how to relax anymore. And we've been here with our family and another couple our age with kids that are similar ages and usually I have lots of time to catch up with the other mom my age, but this time it has almost been nonexisitant. One of us is always wrangling a kid, wiping a nose, feeding someone, getting someone out of trouble, or breaking up a spat.

I know I shouldn't complain b/c I'm hardly the first parent to go on vacation and be exhausted, but it's just another one of those things that NO one tells you in any of those parenting handbooks. We spend so much energy just keeping them entertained, happy, fed and out of trouble in unfamiliar surroundings that we barely get to enjoy the trip. Although I must say that watching Caroline run around in the surf or seeing how excited Bryce gets when he sees a seagull just warms my heart and will make me smile many years from now when I will probably have forgotten the weather.
