Cell Phones = Never Alone?????

So why do people feel the need to talk on their cell phones all the time? I totally think that cell phones are great for contacting people when you really need them, but is there really a need to be "in touch" at all times and never really alone? For example, when I am walking around here on campus, I am amazed at the number of students walking to and from class with a cell phone stuck to their ear. Ummm, you can't walk to class w/o talking to someone? Or I notice when I'm commuting to and from work, the number of people on their cell phones while they are driving. (A BIG NO NO in my book!) Whatever happened to being alone with your thoughts? I hardly ever even turn my phone on unless I'm expecting a call, need to make a quick call (never while driving), or will need to be in touch with my daycare provider b/c of the kids. Hardly anyone even has my number. I guess I just don't understand why people just can't turn off their phones anymore. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't get it. It's okay to be alone for a while and I hope that my kids will never see a cell phone as a way to be in touch with everyone in their social network 24 hours a day.

We are just old. Even the teenager who babysat for us the other night had her own cell phone. I don't even know how to text message yet. I use my cell phone mainly as a clock since I don't wear a watch.
